About Stortorget e Lilla torg

Stortorget, the large square, was opened around 1530, when Malmö was the second city of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is a broad square with stone paving and, in the centre, the equestrian statue of King Carl X Gustav, who took Escânia from Denmark in 1658. The town hall, the Rådhuset, was built in 1546 and received its Dutch Renaissance-style façade in the 19th century. On the other side are the former governor's house and Apoteket Lejonet, a pharmacy with a 19th-century wooden interior.

Behind Stortorget is the church of São Pedro, the S:t Petri kyrka, Gothic, from the 14th century, with a chapel of medieval paintings and a carved wooden altar.

A few steps away is Lilla torg, the small square, created in the 1590s as a market square. Today it is surrounded by half-timbered and brick houses from the 16th to the 19th centuries, occupied by restaurants and bars with pavement tables. In summer the square is crowded late into the evening; in winter the tables get blankets and heaters. The old covered market, the Saluhallen, from 1902, houses the Form/Design Center with design exhibitions.

Between the two squares run pedestrian streets with shops, such as Södergatan, which leads to the canal and to Gustav Adolfs torg.
