Visby – Gotland Capital
How to get there
-
Aeroporto de Visby (VBY) 4 km
-
Porto de Visby (terminal de ferries) 1 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before you buy. The ferry departs from Nynäshamn, about 1 hour from Stockholm by train or bus, and reaches Visby in around 3h15; there is also a ferry from Oskarshamn of about 3 hours. Flights from Stockholm take about 40 minutes to Visby airport, 4 km from the center.
How many days
Two days for the wall, the ruins, the cathedral, the museum and the gardens. Three or four days to include Fårö, Lummelunda cave and the beaches.
When to go
From June to August, with long days, roses and beaches; it's also the busiest time, with Medieval Week in August. May and September are quieter. In winter, Visby is peaceful with few services and short days.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For Visby, no: the old town is walked on foot and is small, though hilly. For Fårö, the beaches and Gotland's interior, a car or bicycle is very helpful because buses are few. Cars and bikes can be rented near the port.
