About Porto e centro de Svendborg

Svendborg grew up around a natural harbour at the head of a bay, facing the Svendborgsund strait and the islands of southern Funen. It was a town of sailors, shipyards and merchants; today the harbour still hosts wooden yachts, fishing boats and the ferries that depart for Ærø and the small islands Skarø, Drejø and Hjortø.

From the harbour, narrow streets climb up to the centre. Igreja de São Nicolau (Sankt Nicolai Kirke), built of brick, dates from the 13th century, and the market square (Torvet) hosts the market. On Fruestræde, Gerritsgade and Brogade you find the low, colourful houses, shops, cafés and bakeries. The German playwright Bertolt Brecht lived nearby, in Skovsbo, in the 1930s.

In summer the steamship M/S Helge crosses the strait between Svendborg, the island of Thurø, Troense and Castelo de Valdemar on Tåsinge. The Svendborgsund bridge beside the harbour takes cars and bikes to Tåsinge and from there on to the islands of Langeland.
