About Teleférico Warairarepano

The Teleférico Warairarepano links the northern edge of Caracas to the highlands of the Ávila range. The lower station is in Maripérez, near avenida Boyacá, at about 1,000 meters altitude, and the cabins rise over the national park forest to the upper station, more than 2,000 meters up. The ascent takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and the temperature drops several degrees along the way.

The cable car was inaugurated in the 1950s, together with the Hotel Humboldt, the 14‑storey cylindrical tower designed by architect Tomás Sanabria that can be seen from across the valley on the mountain top. After a period out of service, the system was rebuilt and given the indigenous name of the range, Waraira Repano.

At the top, the station area has viewpoints, short trails, snack bars and children's rides. To the south you can see the whole Caracas valley, from Petare to downtown; to the north, when the clouds clear, the coast and the Caribbean Sea appear, nearly 2,000 meters below. A dirt road descends to Galipán, a village of farmers known for its flowers, strawberries with cream and mountain restaurants, which can be reached on foot or by the jeeps that run the route.

Clouds arrive quickly at the top of the Ávila, especially in the afternoon and during the rainy season from May to November. Bring a warm layer: up there the temperature usually stays around 15 °C.
