About Peperpot Natuurpark
Peperpot is an old coffee plantation in Commewijne, south of Meerzorg, on the opposite side of the river from Paramaribo. It was established shortly after 1692 and is one of the oldest plantations in the region. It operated until 1998, and today the 700-hectare area is a nature park.
The park still has plantation buildings: the administrator's house, sheds, workers' houses and parts of the coffee processing facilities. Trails and dirt roads run between them into secondary forest, with old canals, wooden bridges and tall trees.
Peperpot is known for birdwatching: toucans, parrots, woodpeckers and many other species commonly appear, and monkeys are found in the treetops. The trails are flat and good for walking or cycling, and guides lead birdwatching groups early in the morning.
