About Moskee Keizerstraat

The Mesquita da Keizerstraat is in Paramaribo's historic center, on the street of the same name. The Muslim community organized there in 1929 and built a first wooden mosque in 1932. The current masonry building, with a dome and two tall minarets, was completed in 1984.

The mosque is the seat of one of the country's Muslim communities, largely made up of descendants of laborers who came from India and Java at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The building features arches, ornate windows and a courtyard in front.

What makes the place well known is its neighborhood: the Mesquita da Keizerstraat stands next to the Sinagoga Neve Shalom, separated only by a wall. The two houses of worship, with their communities living side by side for decades, appear in almost every photo of Paramaribo and are a portrait of the mix of peoples and religions in Suriname.

Internal visits depend on the community and prayer times. From the outside, the mosque and synagogue can be seen together from the Keizerstraat sidewalk, about a five-minute walk from the cathedral.
