About Turning Torso e Västra Hamnen
Turning Torso was inaugurated in 2005 and is 190 meters tall with 54 floors. Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was inspired by one of his sculptures—a human body in torsion: the tower is made up of nine segments of five floors each, each rotated relative to the one below, so the top is turned 90 degrees relative to the base. An external steel structure, like a spine, supports the whole. It is a residential building, with apartments and offices, and is not usually open for visits.
The tower is in Västra Hamnen, the Western Harbour, a neighborhood built from 2001 on the site of the former Kockums shipyard, which made ships until the 1980s. The neighborhood was planned to be sustainable, with renewable energy, pedestrian and bicycle streets, green roofs and canals. The architecture changes from building to building.
The best part of the neighborhood is the waterfront. The Sundspromenaden promenade and the wooden decks at Scaniaparken and Daniaparken lead down to the sea, with bathing stairs, and in summer they fill with people sunbathing and swimming. From there you can see the Øresund strait, the bridge to Copenhagen and, on clear days, the Danish coast. At sunset the sun sets over the water.
Västra Hamnen is a 20-minute walk from the center.
