About Malmöhus slott

Malmöhus was built from 1536 by King Christian III of Denmark, on the site of an earlier castle, to control the Øresund strait and the city, which was Danish at the time. It has thick red-brick walls, rounded gun towers and a water-filled moat, in a park by the sea. It served as a royal residence, a fortress and a prison; among the prisoners was the Earl of Bothwell, husband of Mary Stuart.

Today the castle and the adjacent buildings form the Malmö Museer, the city’s museums. The visit passes through the royal rooms of the castle, the history of Malmö and Scania, the Art Museum, with Nordic art from the 20th and 21st centuries, and the natural history museum, with regional animals. In the basement, the aquarium and terrarium show Øresund fish, tropical fish, snakes and bats, which children enjoy.

Around it, Slottsparken and the neighboring Kungsparken, with lakes and the Slottsmöllan windmill from 1851, are pleasant places for a walk. Across the street, the Teknikens och Sjöfartens hus, the museum of technology and navigation, is part of the same complex and has a submarine that can be visited.

The ticket usually covers all museums in the complex.
