About Lundagård e Universitetshuset

Lundagård is the park that lies between the cathedral and the main building of the Universidade de Lund, founded in 1666. It has lawns, chestnut trees and gravel paths, and it is where students meet, study and picnic on sunny days. It used to be the courtyard of the archbishop's palace in the Middle Ages.

In the middle of the park stands Kungshuset, the King's House, built in 1584 by the Danish king Frederick II, of red brick with an octagonal tower. It was the university's first seat and today houses the philosophy department. At the top of the park is Universitetshuset, the main building, from 1882, designed by Helgo Zettervall, with four sphinxes on the roof and the aula magna where doctoral ceremonies take place. In front of it there is a fountain.

Around the park are the student nations' headquarters, the library buildings and, on the other side, the Akademiska Föreningen, the student association, in a red manor house. The university has about 40,000 students, which gives the city a youthful feel.

On the last day of April, at Valborg, the park fills with students. In May and June graduations take place, with graduates wearing white caps.
