About Kulturen
Kulturen, the Museum of Cultural History of Lund, was founded in 1882 by Georg Karlin, who wanted to preserve the culture of houses and objects from southern Sweden before they disappeared. Unlike Skansen in Estocolmo, it is located inside the city, occupying a whole block a few steps from the cathedral.
There are more than 30 buildings moved from various places and reassembled among gardens and stone courtyards. There are farmhouses from Escânia, a 17th-century pastor's house, the house of a Lund merchant, a small wooden church from Småland dating to 1650, and a teacher's house. Each shows the interior of its era, with furniture, crockery and clothing.
The exhibition buildings hold collections of silver, ceramics, glass, textiles, toys and medieval objects found in the city's archaeological excavations. Temporary exhibitions address everyday life topics. The garden is well kept and usually has an outdoor café in summer.
The museum is open year-round, with reduced hours and some houses closed in winter.
