About Kungsleden

The Kungsleden, the Trilha do Rei, is a long-distance trail known across Sweden. It was opened from the late 19th century by the Swedish tourist association and runs about 440 km between Abisko in the north and Hemavan in the south, crossing valleys, mountains, rivers and reindeer grazing areas. Along it there are mountain huts with beds and kitchens, maintained largely by the tourist association, typically about a day's walk apart.

The trail begins in Abisko, next to the tourist station, at a wooden gateway. The first section, about 15 km, follows the Abiskojåkka river valley through birch forests to lake Abiskojaure, where there are huts. You can do just this section in a day, returning the same way, or continue toward the Kebnekaise area, Sweden's highest mountain, in about a week.

The trail is marked with signs and cairns, has bridges over the larger rivers and boardwalks in boggy areas. Even so, it is a mountain trail, without roads or mobile signal in many stretches, and it requires preparation, appropriate clothing and a map.

The walking season normally runs from late June to mid-September; in winter, parts of the trail become ski routes marked with poles.
