About Aurora Sky Station
The Aurora Sky Station is located on Mount Nuolja, Njullá in Sámi, at about 900 meters altitude above the lights of Abisko. The station was set up to observe the northern lights away from any lighting, taking advantage of the region's frequently clear skies. It has a heated lounge with coffee, an observation tower and outdoor space to watch the sky and photograph.
Access is by chairlift, which departs from the base, a 10-minute walk from Abisko tourist station. The ascent takes about 20 minutes in open two-person chairs; in winter the station lends insulated suits for the ride. Up there, on aurora nights, the sky usually lights up green, sometimes with purple and pink tones, over lake Torneträsk and the mountains. There are nights without aurora or with clouds; the station remains open awaiting conditions.
In summer the station reopens for the midnight sun, usually seen from late May to mid-July, and there are trails that reach the top of Nuolja, at about 1,160 meters, with views to Lapporten. On some nights dinners are served at the station by reservation.
The station closes between seasons, in spring and autumn.
