About Abisko nationalpark
Abisko National Park was established in 1909, one of the first in Europe, to protect an area of mountains, birch forests and rivers in the far north of Sweden. It lies between lake Torneträsk, about 70 km long, and the mountains that border Norway, and covers around 77 km².
Because it sits in the rain shadow of the mountains, Abisko is one of the driest areas of Sweden, with clear skies frequently—a benefit both in summer for hiking and in winter for aurora viewing. Vegetation consists of low birches, alpine plants and, in some parts, rare flowers that favour limestone soils.
The shortest and most visited trail follows the Abiskojåkka river canyon, which cuts the rock near the tourist station, with green-blue water running between stone walls. Other trails climb the slopes, lead to viewpoints over the lake and continue down the valley to lake Abiskojaure. In winter, the same areas are travelled by skis and snowshoes, with guides.
Abisko is also the starting point of the Kungsleden trail, which continues south for about 440 km through the mountains. The park follows Swedish national park regulations, which restrict camping and open fires in some areas.

How much time to set aside
From 2 hours for the canyon to a full day for longer hikes.
Best time
From late June to September, when trails are usually snow-free; from late May to mid-July there is usually the midnight sun. September has autumn colours. From December to March trails become ski and snowshoe routes, and the aurora often appears on clear nights.
How to get there
The main entrance is next to Abisko tourist station, about 95 km from Kiruna via the E10 road. The train from Kiruna stops at Abisko Turiststation station, next to the park.
Tip
Start with the canyon trail, short and easy. Wear layers even in summer, because the weather changes quickly. In summer, use insect repellent: mosquitoes are often numerous in July.
