About Eketorps borg
Öland has remains of about twenty circular Iron Age forts, built from the 4th century as refuges and fortified villages. The one at Eketorp, on the edge of the Stora Alvaret, was excavated between 1964 and 1974, and archaeologists found around 25,000 objects and traces of three occupation phases, from the 4th century to the Middle Ages.
After the excavations, the fortress was partially reconstructed on the original foundations to show how it looked. A circular stone wall about 80 metres in diameter encloses stone houses with turf roofs arranged around a central yard. Inside the houses reconstructions show how people slept, cooked and worked. A small museum displays finds from the digs.
In summer, Eketorp becomes a living village: there are activities with period clothing, crafts, smithing, preparation of ancient food and programs for children. Around the site sheep, pigs and horses of old island breeds graze, and the Alvaret stretches to the horizon.
The fortress only opens during the summer season.
