About Lummelundagrottan
The Lummelunda cave is on Gotland’s west coast, about 13 km north of Visby. It was formed by water dissolving the island’s limestone over thousands of years. The entrance was known for centuries, but in 1948 three boys from Visby went further in and discovered the galleries, which were later explored by cavers for several kilometres.
The visit is guided and covers the first sections of the cave, along walkways and stairs beside an underground river. There are stalactites, stalagmites, calcite formations and chambers with names such as the Salão dos Reis. The temperature is usually around 8 °C year‑round, so warm clothing is needed even in summer.
Outside there is a small visitor centre and, nearby, the rocky coast and sea. The road to the cave passes the beaches and cliffs north of Visby.
The cave is only open during the summer season.
