About Fårö e as raukar de Langhammars

Fårö is an island of about 110 km² north of Gotland, separated by a strait crossed by a short ferry from Fårösund. The landscape is dry and open, with heaths, low pines, stone walls, windmills and limestone houses. It has around five hundred permanent residents and receives many visitors in summer.

What attracts most people are the raukar: limestone columns that the sea and ice have carved over thousands of years from coral reefs that existed there more than 400 million years ago. Some are several metres high and have shapes that resemble human figures, animals or heads. The best-known raukar field is Langhammars, in the northwest of the island, on a gray pebble beach. Digerhuvud, nearby, is long and has raukar aligned along the coast.

Filmmaker Ingmar Bergman shot several works on Fårö and lived there until his death in 2007; he is buried in the island church cemetery. The Bergmancenter on Fårö tells his story and organizes a film week in summer. Sudersand beach, to the east, has fine sand and shallow water.

The raukar are fragile: you must not climb on them.
