About Almedalen e Botaniska trädgården
Almedalen is the park that occupies the site of Visby’s old medieval harbour, between the wall and the sea. The harbour was filled in gradually, and today there is a lake, lawns, trees and paths leading to the sea. It is where locals spend afternoons in summer and where outdoor events take place.
A few minutes’ walk away, inside the wall, is the Botaniska trädgården, Visby’s botanical garden, created in 1855 by the Society of Good Friends, a residents’ association. It is small and well tended, with rose beds, perennials, trees from various countries such as walnut and mulberry, and plants that cope well with Gotland’s relatively mild climate. Among the beds stands the ruin of Sankt Olof, a medieval church.
The garden and the park illustrate a feature of Visby: the island’s climate is often milder than the mainland’s, allowing roses on façades, fig trees in sheltered gardens and plants rarely seen in other Swedish towns. In June and July the roses often cover the old town walls.
Both places lie on the route between the port and the centre.
