About Monteliusvägen
Monteliusvägen is a narrow dirt-and-gravel trail that runs along the top of the north cliff of Södermalm, the island south of Gamla Stan. It is about 500 metres between old wooden houses and gardens, with benches facing the water. From there you can look down on the island of Riddarholmen with the church’s iron tower, Gamla Stan, the City Hall across the Mälaren and the bridges that link the islands.
The path lies in the Mariaberget neighbourhood, one of the oldest parts of Södermalm, with steep streets and stone stairways. Nearby are the Maria Magdalena church from the 17th century and the narrow streets of wooden houses that survived the fires. Going down the steps leads to the waterfront of Söder Mälarstrand, where restaurant boats are moored.
The viewpoint is sought out at dusk, when the sun sets over the Mälaren. In summer the sunset usually happens around 22:00 and the light lasts a long time; in winter, around 15:00. Other viewpoints on the same island are Skinnarviksberget, the highest rock in the centre, a few minutes away, and Fjällgatan on the east side, with views toward Djurgården.
There is no infrastructure apart from benches, and the path has uneven sections.
