About Dalarnas museum
Dalarnas museum is housed in a building on the banks of the river Faluån, in the centre of Falun, and tells the story of the province's culture that many Swedes associate with the traditional countryside.
One of the most popular sections is that of dalmålning, the folk painting of Dalarna, created by village painters in the 18th and 19th centuries on walls, furniture and cloth. It mixes scenes from the Bible with people dressed in period costume, and is full of kurbits, stylized flowers that became a hallmark of the region and still appear today on Dala horses. The museum also has a large collection of traditional costumes: each village had its festive outfit, and many are still worn at Midsommar and at weddings.
Other rooms deal with folk music, featuring violins and the nyckelharpa, a keyed instrument typical of Sweden, as well as regional art and artists connected to Dalarna. The writer Selma Lagerlöf, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, lived in Falun, and the museum preserves her workroom, moved from the house where she lived.
The museum has temporary exhibitions and a café with a view over the river.
