About Carl Larsson-gården

Carl Larsson-gården, called by the family Lilla Hyttnäs, is the house where the painter Carl Larsson and the textile artist and designer Karin Larsson lived with their eight children from 1888. It stands on the riverbank in the village of Sundborn, 13 km from Falun. The couple transformed a simple house into a home full of colour: painted walls, decorated doors, furniture made by the family, and Karin's textiles and embroideries.

Carl painted the house and the daily life of his children in watercolours that became books, such as Ett hem, Um lar, of 1899. The images circulated worldwide and helped create the idea of the Swedish home as bright, simple, cheerful and functional, which still influences the country's design. Karin, meanwhile, created textiles and furniture with modern lines for the time, now recognised as part of design history.

The house remains with the family, who keep it as it was. The visit is guided, in small groups, for about 45 minutes, and goes through the living room, the dining room, the studio, the bedrooms and the kitchen. Photos inside the house are usually not allowed. Next to it are the garden, a café, a shop and a visitor centre with exhibitions about the couple.

In the church of Sundborn, near the house, there are paintings by Carl Larsson, and the couple are buried in the cemetery.
