About Plaza de Armas de Trujillo

The Plaza de Armas is the starting point of Trujillo's layout, founded by the Spaniards in 1534. Around it are the Cathedral, the Municipal Palace, the Archbishopric and colonial and republican mansions, with façades painted yellow, blue and other bright colors and wrought-iron window grilles.

It was on the square that Trujillo's independence was proclaimed on December 29, 1820. In the center stands the Monument to Liberty, inaugurated in 1929, a work by the German sculptor Edmund Moeller in marble and copper.

The Cathedral, built between 1647 and 1666 after earthquakes that toppled earlier churches, has a sober interior, with Baroque and Rococo altarpieces in white and gold. Casa Urquiaga sits on one of the corners of the square.

The square is the place to begin a walk through the historic center, which extends about ten blocks in each direction, inside the ring of Avenida España, laid out over the old city wall.
