About Huaca Arco Iris

Huaca Arco Iris is in the La Esperanza district, in north Trujillo, a few kilometers from Chan Chan. It is a Chimú temple, built around the 11th century, also known as Huaca del Dragón.

The structure is a pyramid of two stepped platforms, protected by a high wall with a single entrance. A ramp leads to the first level and another, smaller one, to the second, where there are 14 storage rooms that held food and goods.

What stands out are the mud friezes on the walls, with an arc shaped like a rainbow that gives the temple its name, two‑headed figures resembling snakes or dragons, and human figures. Part of the reliefs has been restored to show the original design.

The visit is short and is often done together with Chan Chan on the same tour.
