About Moray
Moray is located on the high plateau between Urubamba and Chinchero, near the village of Maras, at about 3,500 meters altitude. The site gathers Inca terraces built in concentric circles within natural depressions in the ground, like an amphitheater descending into the earth. The largest of them is about 30 meters deep.
Studies show that temperature changes from one level to another, with differences of several degrees between the top and the bottom. For this reason, many researchers see Moray as an experimental agricultural center, where the Incas tested growing plants under different conditions, similar to what is done in a greenhouse. The terraces had an irrigation and drainage system that still works.
There are four groups of terraces, and the largest is the best preserved. Visits are made along the rim trails, with viewpoints over the circles; it is not allowed to go down onto the terraces. Around the site, the plateau has fields of potato, barley and quinoa, and in the background the snowcapped peaks of the Urubamba range.
Moray is part of the Cusco tourist ticket and is usually visited together with the Salineras de Maras, a few kilometers away. Bring a hat and sunscreen: the plateau is exposed and the sun is strong.
