About Plaza de Armas de Chiclayo

The Plaza de Armas of Chiclayo, also called Parque Principal, is the city's center, on Avenida Balta. Chiclayo began as a Franciscan indigenous reducción in the 16th century and grew as a trading point between Zaña and Lambayeque.

The Cathedral of Santa María occupies one side of the square. The design dates from 1869, and construction resumed in 1928 and was completed in 1939. The neoclassical façade has two levels, with Doric columns in front of the three entrance arches, Corinthian columns on the upper floor, and two towers with small domes. The bells came from Germany, landed at the port of Pimentel.

Next to it is the Municipal Palace, and the square has benches, trees, and a fountain in the center. At night, with the Cathedral illuminated, the square is a meeting point for residents.

It is the place to begin a tour of the center, which continues along Avenida Balta to the Mercado Modelo, a few blocks away.
