About Mercado Modelo de Chiclayo
The Mercado Modelo is Chiclayo's main supply market and the city's commercial center. It is a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas, between Avenida Balta and the streets Juan Cuglievan, Manuel Pardo and Arica, and the activity spreads into the surrounding blocks.
What most attracts visitors is the medicinal plants section, with about 80 specialized stalls. There hundreds of varieties of herbs, roots, barks and seeds are sold, many brought from the Chongoyape valley, as well as amulets, perfumes and objects used in rituals that mix Andean traditions and popular Catholicism. The northern region of Peru has a long tradition of healers.
Elsewhere in the market there are fruits from the coast and the highlands, cheeses, breads, spices and food stalls, offering juices and northern dishes.
The visit shows the city's day-to-day life. The aisles get crowded, especially in the morning and in the weeks before Christmas.
