About Plaza de Armas de Chachapoyas
The Plaza de Armas of Chachapoyas is a square of about 100 meters per side, in the center of the city founded by the Spaniards in 1538. Around it are the Cathedral, public buildings and colonial and republican mansions, with white walls, balconies and dark wooden doors and tiled roofs.
The historic center of Chachapoyas is recognized as a cultural heritage of Peru. The mansions usually have internal courtyards with gardens, and many have become hotels, cafes and shops. The cobbled streets that lead from the square go to the churches of Santa Ana and the Señor de Burgos and to the old neighborhoods.
In the center of the square there is a fountain, and mornings usually begin with mist that lifts as the sun appears.
The square is the city's meeting point and where agencies depart for Kuélap, Gocta and other tours.
