The city
Chachapoyas, capital of the Amazonas department, lies at about 2,300 metres on the eastern slope of the Andes. Founded in 1538, it has a historic centre of white houses with wooden balconies around the Plaza de Armas. It is the base for the citadel of Kuélap, the Gocta waterfall, the Karajía sarcophagi, the Revash mausoleums and the Museo Leymebamba, legacies of the chachapoya culture.
