About Museo Leymebamba
Museo Leymebamba is located near the village of Leymebamba in the upper Utcubamba valley, about 80 km south of Chachapoyas. It was created to house material found in the mausoleums of the Laguna de los Cóndores, a lake high in the highlands, a day's walk from the village.
In the lake mausoleums, discovered in 1997, there were more than 200 mummies and hundreds of objects from the Chachapoya and Inca cultures. Some of the mummies are in the museum, in a climate-controlled room, wrapped in the textile bundles in which they were buried. Some have faces embroidered or carved into the bundles.
The other rooms display pottery, textiles, wooden objects and quipus, the knotted cords the Incas used to record numbers. The building, with thatched roofs and gardens, attracts hummingbirds in the surroundings.
The visit is usually combined with the Revash mausoleums on the same day, or with an overnight in Leymebamba, from where the trail to the Laguna de los Cóndores departs.
