About Mausoleos de Revash

The Revash mausoleums are located in the district of Santo Tomás, in the province of Luya, about 60 km south of Chachapoyas, at around 2,800 meters above sea level. They were built by the Chachapoya culture on an outcrop of the Cerro Carbón cliff, above the upper Utcubamba valley.

The mausoleums are shaped like small two-story houses with pitched roofs, made of stone and mud and painted red and cream. They are aligned along the rock outcrop, forming a kind of miniature village. On the cliff walls there are red rock paintings.

The structures housed the dead and offerings, but were looted long ago. The resemblance to the cliff dwellings of the southwestern United States often catches visitors' attention.

Access is via a trail that climbs from the village of San Bartolo. The visit is often combined with Museo Leymebamba on the same day.
