About Stavanger domkirke
Stavanger Cathedral was begun around 1125, when the town became a bishopric, and is dedicated to Saint Swithun, an English saint. It is the oldest cathedral in Norway that retains its medieval appearance. The gray stone nave has thick columns and rounded arches of the Anglo-Norman Romanesque style, brought by English builders.
The choir was rebuilt in the Gothic style after a fire at the end of the 13th century, with tall windows and two small towers on the east façade, the most photographed side of the church. The colorful stained-glass windows of the choir are from the 20th century and depict scenes from the life of Christ.
The highlight of the interior is the Baroque pulpit, from 1658, carved and painted wood with biblical figures, angels and ornamentation on several levels, supported by a figure of Samson. Painted epitaphs of merchant families cover the nave walls.
The cathedral stands by the lake Breiavatnet in the centre, with the square and the market beside it and the cathedral school, one of the oldest in the country. It remains an active church, with masses and organ concerts.
