About Norsk Oljemuseum
The Norsk Oljemuseum, the Museu do Petróleo, tells how the discovery of oil in the North Sea at the end of the 1960s changed Norway and Stavanger. The building, at the tip of the harbor, mixes granite blocks and steel cylinders that evoke offshore platforms, and overlooks the fjord and the islands.
The exhibition explains how oil formed on the seabed, how it was found and how it is extracted, with scale models of platforms, real equipment and a cross-section of a drilling rig. One section deals with the life of workers at sea, with two-week shifts, reconstructed sleeping quarters and mess halls, and the accidents that marked the industry's history.
There are also simulators and interactive areas: an escape tube tunnel that children use as a slide, a room that recreates a storm at sea and the diving section with the diving suits used in the construction of underwater pipelines. Outside, decommissioned platform parts have been turned into a playground, the Geoparken.
The museum also covers the sovereign wealth fund that Norway created with oil revenues and the transition to other energy sources, topics present in the country's daily life.
