How to get there

  • Sandane lufthavn, Anda (SDN) Sandane · 60 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Confirm before buying. Sandane airport is about an hour away; Ålesund is about three hours. From Bergen it’s roughly five and a half hours by car or bus; from Geiranger about 1h30. Buses link Loen with Stryn and Olden.

How many days

One day for the Skylift and Lovatnet with Kjenndalsbreen. Two days including Briksdal in Olden and the national park centre.

When to go

From May to September, with trails clear of snow, the lake boat and visitor centres open; June and July have very long days. In winter, short days, snow in the mountains and fewer services.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Covers the Lodalen valley, Oppstryn and Olden. Without a car, the Skylift is in town, and in summer there are usually buses and organized tours.

    Loen Skylift

    Go up Mount Hoven early, while the fjord is still calm.

  2. Afternoon
    Lovatnet

    Follow the Lodalen valley along the green lake.

  3. Late afternoon
    Kjenndalsbreen

    Walk to the viewpoint of the glacier front, at the bottom of the valley.

  4. Evening
    Loen

    Have dinner in the village, by the fjord.

Day 1

  1. Morning
    Loen Skylift

    Cable car and a trail on top of Hoven.

  2. Afternoon
    Lovatnet and Kjenndalsbreen

    Lodalen valley and the glacier.

  3. Late afternoon
    Fjord shore

    Walk along the shore of the Innvikfjord in Loen.

  4. Evening
    Loen

    Dinner in the village.

Day 2

  1. Morning
    Briksdal

    Head to Olden and travel up Oldedalen to the Briksdalsbreen glacier.

  2. Afternoon
    Oppstryn

    Visit the Jostedalsbreen National Park centre.

  3. Late afternoon
    Stryn

    Stop in Stryn for shopping and a coffee.

  4. Evening
    Return to Loen

    Return to Loen or continue on to Geiranger.

Does Loen have tourist facilities?

Yes, hotels, cabins and restaurants. For a supermarket and more services, Stryn is 10 km away.

How to get from Loen to Geiranger?

By car, in about 1h30, via road 15 and the mountain road to Geiranger.

Are there glacier tours departing from Loen?

In summer, regional agencies usually organize guided walks on tongues of the Jostedalsbreen.

How long to stay in Loen?

One to two days, including Olden and Briksdal.
