About Stegastein

The Stegastein viewpoint is on the road that climbs from Aurland towards the Aurlandsfjellet mountain, about 8 km from the village. It is a wooden platform with a steel structure that protrudes from the hillside and extends around 30 meters into the air, ending in glass, 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord.

From the end of the platform you can see the fjord almost along its entire length: Flåm at the bottom, Aurland below, Undredal on the other side and, to the right, the entrance to the Nærøyfjord between the mountains. The platform was designed by architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen and is part of the Rotas Turísticas Nacionais, Norway’s network of scenic roads, with viewpoints and restrooms designed by architects.

The road that passes Stegastein is the Aurlandsfjellet road, known as the snow road, which crosses the mountain to Lærdal across a plateau of rocks and lakes. It is usually closed from November to May or June. The section to the viewpoint is often open year-round, but with snow and ice in winter; check before you go.

In summer, tour buses climb from Flåm to the viewpoint, with a stop of about 20 minutes. By car, the parking is small and fills up around midday.
