About Paimion parantola
The Paimio Sanatorium was designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto for the treatment of people with tuberculosis. The building organizes wings, circulation areas and living spaces in relation to light and the forested landscape. It is one of the components of the Aalto Works World Heritage.
An architectural visit helps understand why colors, surfaces, furniture and usage details were conceived together. The interest is not only the facade: the sequence of spaces explains the care concept that guided the project. Accessible areas depend on the type of visit offered.
Paimio is located outside Turku’s center and requires a dedicated road trip. Book in advance on the official website for a guided visit and check the meeting point. Do not treat a walk around the surroundings as equivalent to seeing the sanatorium interiors.
