A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Turku organizes its central area around the Aura river. The castle lies near the mouth, while museums and riverside paths are spread along the urban stretch. Aboa Vetus Ars Nova presents the excavated city, and Luostarinmäki preserves the scale of a wooden neighbourhood.

The destination also allows a trip to Paimio to see the former sanatorium by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The visit requires a reservation and your own transport. In the Archipelago Sea, Örö offers access to the national park with trails and a boat crossing from the mainland.

In the region, Finnish and Swedish coexist on signs: Turku also appears as Åbo. To travel the islands, plan road sections and ferries, checking the operation of each connection. Naantali and Parainen can be included as en-route stops without turning the whole archipelago into a rushed day trip.

This destination brings together 1 city: Turku.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to September there are usually more navigation options and long days. From December to February winter tends to be cold with little daylight; museums take a larger role.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Four days allow for two urban periods, Paimio and a trip to the archipelago. With more time, spread overnight stays across the islands instead of concentrating all crossings in one day.

Which city to stay in

The centre near the Aura favors walking and meals without long transfers. The port area serves those with early departures. To stay overnight on the islands, first check the road or ferry connection from your base.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Frequently asked questions about Turku and the archipelago

Can Turku serve as a base for the archipelago?

Yes, but boat departures leave from different ports and require land transfers.

How many days allow time for Paimio and an island?

Four days allow you to split the urban visit, the sanatorium and a maritime outing.

Why do maps also use the name Åbo?

Åbo is the Swedish name for Turku, in a region where both languages appear.

Do I need to do the whole island circuit in one day?

No. Splitting the sections avoids relying on a tight sequence of ferries and allows walking at the stops.
