About Bomarsund
Bomarsund is a set of ruins, not a preserved castle with furnished rooms. The remaining stone structures belong to a 19th‑century fortress that was never completed. The visit combines reading the buildings with walking paths in an open area by the sea.
The visitor centre helps interpret the scale of the project and the traces found on the site. Low walls and foundation sections require attention to the original scale: part of the interest lies in what the building left as a mark on the landscape. Indoor programming follows its own calendar.
Arrive with time to walk, rather than treating the site as just a photo stop. From May to September the long days usually make it easy to combine with Kastelholm. Outside that period, check the condition of the routes and which services will be available before leaving your base.
