at your own pace.

Åland is an archipelago of Finland where Swedish governs the names on signs. Mariehamn, its administrative center, occupies a strip of land between two harbors. The maritime museum presents the islands’ relationship with navigation, complemented by the quay and sailing-boat scenery.

On the main island, Kastelholm lets you visit a medieval castle, while Bomarsund features the ruins of a 19th-century fortress. Both sites are in Sund and make a road itinerary from Mariehamn. The smaller islands require attention to ferry connections.

Plan arrival as part of the trip: the ferry offers Baltic views but has its own duration and disembarkation port. A bicycle covers chosen routes depending on distance, while bus and car help for longer transfers. Check museums’ schedules before allocating days.
