About Olón
Olón is a fishing community about 4 km north of Montañita, at the foot of the Cordillera Chongón-Colonche, a low mountain range covered in forest. The village has over 3 km of wide, flat beach with firm sand, with waves milder than Montañita's and much less activity.
The beach is used for long walks, swimming and surf lessons for beginners, and in the late afternoon the fishing boats return to the sand. Along the shore there are simple guesthouses and seafood restaurants.
At the top of a hill, at the entrance to the village, is the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar, a white church with an image of the Virgin, from where you can see the whole beach, the sea and the green range behind. The climb is short, via the road.
Olón is a good base for those who want to be near Montañita but in a quieter place.

It is about 4 km north of Montañita, a few minutes by bus or taxi along the coastal road. The sanctuary is at the entrance to the village, atop the hill.
Tip
Climb to the sanctuary for the view of the beach and then walk along the sand to where the fishing boats are hauled up.
