About Ærøskøbing

Ærøskøbing is the best-known town on the island of Ærø, in the southern Funen archipelago. It was a trading and seafaring town from the Middle Ages and has kept the street plan and houses from the 17th and 18th centuries almost intact, with colorful façades, carved doors, window boxes and gas lamps. It is one of Denmark's smallest chartered towns.

The main streets, Vestergade and Søndergade, are cobbled and lined with low half-timbered and brick houses with courtyards and gardens. The Flaskeskibssamlingen, the ship-in-a-bottle collection, brings together hundreds of miniatures made by a former ship's cook known as Flaske-Peter. The town museum tells the story of Ærø and local seafaring.

The island of Ærø is small and easy to explore by bike, with signposted routes through fields, windmills and beaches. On the headland near the town, Vesterstrand beach has the colorful bathing huts that have become the island's postcard image.
