About Castelo de Valdemar (Valdemars Slot)

Castelo de Valdemar is located on the east coast of Tåsinge, facing the Svendborgsund strait. Christian IV had it built between 1639 and 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian, who never lived there and died in battle in Poland in 1656. In 1678 the king granted the castle and the lands of Tåsinge to Admiral Niels Juel as a reward for his victory over the Swedish fleet in the bay of Køge, and his descendants remain the owners.

The main building, remodeled in the 18th century in a baroque style, has halls furnished with family furniture, portraits and porcelain, a chapel and the old kitchen. In the outbuildings the castle houses a toy museum, the Iuel-Brockdorff family's large-game hunting trophy collection and a small maritime museum.

The park slopes down to the water, with a pier where, in summer, the M/S Helge from Svendborg moors. Nearby, Tåsinge’s beach and woodlands have trails, and the village of Troense lies 2 km to the north.
