About Gudhjem e os defumadouros

Gudhjem is a fishing village built on a granite slope, with steep streets and houses with tiled roofs that descend to a small harbour. The name means "home of God." It was there that herring began to be smoked in Bornholm, and from the 1840s the island's smoked fish was sent to Copenhagen.

The smokehouses (røgerier), with tall white chimneys, are near the harbour and serve herring and other smoked fish freshly smoked over alder wood. The typical dish is "Sol over Gudhjem": smoked herring on rye bread, with chives, radish and a raw egg yolk in the middle. The Museu Oluf Høst shows the house and the paintings of the artist who lived in the village.

High up in the village, the Bokul viewpoint looks out over the sea and the roofs. A boat to Christiansø leaves from the harbour, and a coastal trail runs north to Helligdomsklipperne and south to Melsted, with pebble beaches.
