Santa Marta – Magdalena Capital

How to get there

  • Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar (SMR) 16 km
  • Terminal de Transportes de Santa Marta 5 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Confirm before purchasing. Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar is about 16 km south of the center, with flights from Bogotá, Medellín and other cities; a taxi takes 20 to 30 minutes. From Cartagena it’s about 230 km by road, four to five hours via Barranquilla. For some areas, such as Parque Tayrona, yellow fever vaccination is commonly recommended or required; check before you travel.

How many days

With four days, the city and the Quinta take one day, Tayrona one or two, and Minca the last. With more time, add Taganga, El Rodadero and an overnight inside the park.

When to go

The heat is constant, around 30 °C. From December to April it usually rains less and is the busiest season; from September to November rains are typically heavier. Tayrona often closes during periods in February, June and from October to November; check before you go.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

No. The center is walkable; taxis and city buses take you to the Quinta, to El Rodadero and to Taganga; buses leave the center for the Tayrona entrance and vans go to Minca. A car helps if you want to combine Tayrona with other points along the road to Riohacha.
