About Museo Arqueológico de Áncash Augusto Soriano Infante

The Museo Arqueológico de Áncash was created in 1935 at the suggestion of archaeologist Julio C. Tello and through the initiative of Father Augusto Soriano Infante, who gives the museum its name. It faces the Plaza de Armas of Huaraz, in a three-story building.

The four rooms tell the history of the region from the first hunters of the Caverna del Guitarrero to the Incas. There are ceramics, textiles, metal and stone pieces, and mummies, from the Chavín, Recuay, Moche, Wari, Chimú and Inca cultures. Part of the collection comes from the Tumba de Jancu, near Huaraz, with goldsmithing and ceramic pieces.

The highlight is the inner garden, the lithic park, with more than 150 stone monoliths, mostly of the Recuay culture: warriors, seated figures and carved heads, among native trees such as the queñual, the amieiro and the molle.

The visit is good for the first day in Huaraz, when it is still early to go up to the lagoons, and helps to understand what is later seen at Chavín de Huántar.
