About Laguna Churup
Laguna Churup is at about 4,450 meters, inside Parque Nacional Huascarán, east of Huaraz, at the foot of neveado Churup. The green-blue water fills a cirque of dark rock, with the glacier above.
The trail starts in the village of Pitec, at about 3,900 meters, a 45-minute drive from Huaraz. The route climbs through pastures and rocky slopes, and the final section has sections where you use your hands, with fixed cables in some spots. The ascent typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
About an hour beyond the main lake is Churupita, a smaller lake closer to the neveado. From the trail you can see the Callejón de Huaylas and the Cordillera Negra on the other side.
Because of its proximity to Huaraz, Churup is often used as an acclimatization hike before Laguna 69.
