About Glaciar Pastoruri
Neveado Pastoruri is in the district of Cátac, in the southern Cordillera Blanca, and reaches about 5,240 meters. The Pastoruri glacier descends the northern slope and is one of the most accessible tropical glaciers in the Andes: the road reaches about 4,800 meters, and a roughly 2 km walk takes you to the glacier front.
The glacier is retreating and has lost much of its size in recent decades. Where there was once ice there is now exposed rock, and the visit also highlights the effects of warming on the mountains. The visit follows a marked path with conservation rules.
The trip from Huaraz includes stops en route: the Pumapampa sector, with fields of Puya raimondii; mineral springs with natural carbonation; and ancient rock paintings.
It is the highest-altitude excursion you can do from Huaraz without mountaineering experience. Many travelers feel the altitude; ideally you go after spending a few days in the town.
