About Complejo Arqueológico Chotuna-Chornancap
The Chotuna-Chornancap complex is in the district of Lambayeque, about 6 km west of the city, on the way to the sea. It is a group of truncated pyramids and adobe enclosures that once had surrounding residential areas and cemeteries, and served as a ceremonial center for the Lambayeque culture between 700 and 1300, later occupied by the Chimú and the Incas.
The two main pyramids are Chotuna and Chornancap. Popular tradition links Chotuna to Chot, the place where, according to the legend told by chroniclers, Ñaimlap kept the idol Yampallec after arriving by sea and founding the Lambayeque dynasty.
At Chornancap, excavations revealed the tomb of a high-status woman, known as the priestess of Chornancap, buried with metal and ceramic ornaments.
The site museum displays the excavation pieces and explains the legend of Ñaimlap. The visit is relaxed and rounds out a day in Lambayeque.
