The city
Peru's second city, Arequipa is at about 2,330 meters, at the foot of the volcanoes Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu. The historic center, a World Heritage Site, is built of sillar, a white volcanic stone, and has the Plaza de Armas with the Cathedral, the Monasterio de Santa Catalina and colonial mansions. It is the base for the Colca valley and a good stop to acclimatize to the altitude.
