Get to know the place
Vesterålen is an archipelago in northern Norway, with islands linked by roads, bridges and boat services. Andenes, at the tip of Andøya, is one of the bases for sea activities and for exploring the island's west coast.
Andenes lighthouse, the village of Bleik and the Andøymuseet allow you to combine maritime history and scenery. In Stokmarknes, the Hurtigrutemuseet shows the role of coastal connections through a preserved ship and its exhibitions.
Excursions should be organized from a base, as distances across the archipelago take up part of the day. Summer usually brings extended daylight, while winter typically brings cold and short days. Whale-watching departures operate throughout the year but require booking and depend on sea conditions.

The local experience
Andenes lighthouse is a cast-iron tower painted red beside the village harbour, at the northern tip of Andøya. The structure helps identify the coastline profile and reflects the area's connection to navigation and fishing.
The Hurtigrutemuseet is located on the Stokmarknes waterfront and presents the history of Norwegian coastal navigation. The complex includes the ship Finnmarken, preserved inside a protective building, which allows visitors to relate the visit to the harbour and passenger routes.
Bleik is a village on the western coast of Andøya, with houses close to the sandy strip and surrounding mountains. The visit combines a walk through the inhabited core and observation of the beach, without relying on an activity at sea.
The Andøymuseet is located by the harbour of Andenes and presents stories related to life in northern Norway. The exhibition about Hilmar Nøis’s trajectory lets you learn about the work and experience of someone who lived in polar regions. The visit takes place in the museum building, separate from the lighthouse climb.
