About Vågan kirke
The church of Vågan, in Kabelvåg, is called the Cathedral of Lofoten, although it is not a cathedral. It was built in 1898, of wood, in the neo-Gothic style, with a tall tower and a pale-yellow façade, and has about 1,200 seats, a number far greater than the local population. The size is explained by fishing: in the cod season, thousands of fishermen came to Kabelvåg and the nearby villages.
Inside, the nave is wide and bright, with wooden galleries around, painted pews and an altar with a reredos. It is one of the largest wooden churches in northern Norway and continues to be a parish church, with masses and concerts.
Kabelvåg, the village where it stands, is the oldest settlement in Lofoten, known as Vágar in the Viking Age. About 2 km from the church, in Storvågan, are the Lofotmuseet, a museum of fishing and island life housed in an old merchant's trading post, and the Lofotakvariet, an aquarium with coastal fish and otters. Nearby there is also an art gallery with works by painters who depicted the islands.
The church is about 5 km from Svolvær, beside the E10.
