About Nusfjord
Nusfjord is a fishing village on the island of Flakstadøya, in a narrow cove between mountains, about 6 km from the E10. Occupied since the Middle Ages, it was chosen in the 1970s as one of Europe's pilot projects for architectural heritage preservation, and the buildings were kept as they were.
The village has red and yellow rorbuer on stilts, merchant houses, a 1907 warehouse that still operates as a shop with counters and old goods, the factory where cod liver oil was made, the sawmill, the blacksmith and wooden quays. Signs explain what life was like in the fishing season.
The rorbuer operate as accommodation run by a resort that looks after the village, and there's a restaurant and café at the harbour. A short trail climbs the slope to a viewpoint over the cove, and another leads to the lakes above.
In summer, entrance to the village is usually charged, which helps with maintenance. In winter, with less activity, the village returns to the calm pace of a small harbour.
